What Is eHarmony?
eHarmony is best known for the extensive quiz you take to join and is widely regarded as an excellent dating site. It's the site people turn to when they're ready to meet someone special to find real love. It's more suited to serious singles who are ready for a long-term relationship. They've got the most in-depth matching system, which is based on the registration quiz, and this is the primary tool to help you find someone.
This eHarmony review will cover some of the pros and cons of the site and its best features. We'll let you know how much eHarmony costs per month and what you need to do to log in and complete your profile. We'll also look at how high or low quality the other users are and if there are any safety concerns or features you should know about. Lastly, we'll answer some burning FAQs, and conclude with some final thoughts.

Login Process
Creating a profile on eHarmony com is an easy but lengthy process, and you'll want to set aside 15-30 minutes for it. From the home page, you'll first encounter the question, "Have you tried online dating before?". Once you've answered that it's your first time, you've tried once or twice, or that you're a pro, you'll be asked what kind of relationship you're looking for. You're then asked for your gender and if you're looking for a man, woman, or nonbinary person.
Next, you'll enter your email address, create your password, and click 'Join now'. This will immediately launch the Compatibility Quiz. There's no way to skip this step, and it takes the most time since it has around 80 questions. After completing the Compatibility Quiz, you'll need to enter more details to complete your profile. It asks for your first and last name, your birthdate, and allows you to add more details about your gender if you need to.
You'll also need to indicate your occupation, annual income, education level, height, marital status, and whether you have children. It'll ask which country you live in, your zip code, your religion, ethnicity, and how you found out about eHarmony dating. You can add a photo at this point or at a later stage as well.
You're then asked to answer at least one question for your profile, the questions are presented prompts asking things like: "If I need advice, I'm calling…" or "A perfect day for me….". After that, you'll need to write a little about yourself, a preview which will be shown on your profile. And at last, you can enter the site. Once you've logged out, your eHarmony login process involves entering your email address and password on the given fields.
Profile Completion
You'd think after completing the quiz that your profile would be fully complete, but unfortunately, it's not. In fact, post registration, your profile will only be around 50% complete. If you haven't already, you'll first be encouraged to add photos to your profile. Interestingly, you can reach 100% completeness without adding a single photo, which seems like an oversight.
All it takes is completing more profile questions, where you write a few words as an answer to a prompt. Our test profile reached 100% completion when we answered 11 profile questions. On the right side of the screen, you'll be able to add some more basic details about yourself. These include your political and religious views, which languages you speak, what pets you have, or some specific movies you like.
You can also scroll to the bottom to add more interests, like your taste in food and drinks and some character traits. While none of the profile sections are unique, it's unusual for a profile to request quite so much information from you. Other dating sites will only ask a select few of the questions asked here.
User Account Quality
As a well-known site, there are many users and profiles to browse through. There are some profiles with no pictures, but the majority of users have photos. One downside is that with a free account, most of the users you'll see live very far away. This is a tactic to get you to buy premium because, with a membership, you can set your filters to show matches who live near you.
The strenuous account creation process is an effective barrier against bots and scammers creating profiles. Most other users seem to be real and have, at a minimum, completed the Compatibility Quiz, although this is a requirement to join the site. This means that even the emptiest profiles still show a compatibility score, which makes it more tempting to engage with people if you can see you're well-matched.
Dating Features
Compatibility Quiz
This huge quiz has around 80 questions and takes some time to complete, but it is worth it in the end. The first section asks for your preferences on a wide range of topics, like where you'd like to live, your reasons for wanting a relationship, and what attracts you to a partner. Some other questions include what you think about cheating? And have you thought about your wedding?
The second section asks questions about you, like what you think is important in a relationship, your drinking and smoking habits, how you spend your free time, and what your hobbies are. It also asks if you enjoy cooking, how often you work out or play sports, your favorite type of music, your ideal home temperature, and if you're a morning or night owl. At this point, you'll be 40% done.
The next section has more abstract questions, which show you various pictures of shapes and ask you to choose the ones you like the most. You'll pick between horizontal and vertical wavy lines, rounder or spikier shapes, a picture of a maze, or one that looks like shattered glass.
Section 3 has questions about your everyday habits and how you see the world. These questions include things like if your personal style is more muted or bold, if you mind when other people are on their phones around you, how you react if someone close to you upsets you, or how you'd react if you see your partner flirting with someone else at a party.
The 4th and final section asks if you like how you look, if you believe that people are inherently good, how you feel about expensive restaurants, or your things being in certain places. While the quiz is very long, the questions are interesting when you think about your future partner taking the same quiz, and hopefully, you've picked similar answers.
Compatibility Scores
Each profile shown to you in the 'Discover' tab will have a compatibility score, showing you how well you match based on the quiz. This is a number between 60 and 140. The higher the number, the more compatible you are. Anything over 110 is a very high match, and you're encouraged to contact anyone you score over 100 with.
You're able to click on the number, and you'll be directed to a dedicated page showing how you match up. It basically compares your results and theirs. This is an excellent way of seeing at a glance that you've got a lot or a little in common with someone, and it's a deeper commonality than just both having similar hobbies. It means you see the world in similar ways and share values.
This page will even tell you your common ground, so it'll be transparent about what aspects you match well in (for example, if you have similar habits or share many values). And there's a 'Development potential' section, too, which will let you know if your compatibility suggests that there's a good chance for it to develop into something more or not.
Icebreakers
If coming up with an opening line isn't your strong suit, but you know you want to get the ball rolling after saying "hey", eHarmony.com has its own brand of Icebreakers. These can prevent the conversation from stalling after the first message. After you've sent your first message to your match, you can select the plus sign next to the typing bar and select Icebreakers to start playing.
This feature will show you 5 sets of pictures with 2 scenarios, and you need to pick the one that appeals to you the most. Once you've both answered, you can see each other's picks and chat about it. The pictures vary each time, but they could include an electric vs acoustic guitar, a newspaper vs a tablet, backpacking in a jungle vs pulling a suitcase through a hotel lobby. You can also reset each picture set once.
Search Filters
You can use the search filters to help you find your true love among many perfect matches in the dating pool. These include setting an age or height range, specifying if you're open to dating someone who has children or, if they should be child-free, and if they want children in the future. You can also change the location you're searching in by expanding the search to include other states or even other countries. These filters are all available on a free profile.
With Premium, you can apply advanced filters. These allow you to filter potential matches based on their religion, ethnicity, income level, or education level. The advanced filters also include the smoking filter, where you can choose to match with smokers or non-smokers, and this is the only way to ensure your matches are prioritized by being near you and not across the country.
Homepage Dashboard
You can tell that the eHarmony dating site has been well-designed and is regularly updated, as the sleek homepage has relevant information beyond just showing you tons of photos like other dating sites. You can alter your background, which adds a banner to the top of your homepage and profile to personalize it and add some color. You can browse through beautiful pictures to select just the right one. This dashboard is also available on the eHarmony app.
You can see some relevant shortcuts in that first banner, including new messages, your profile completeness percentage, and the SMS verification button. Below that, you'll see a list of new people who've liked your profile, as well as some helpful tips on how to get started and make the most of your profile. Finally, below that are your new matches, a shortcut bar to your settings or personality profile, and the welcoming discount will also be displayed for the first 2 days.
Prices & Costs
E Harmony makes their money through ads on the site and premium membership. There are 3 different plans available, which all share the same perks but are valid for different lengths of time. The perks are:
View all the photos on other users' profiles.
Read and reply to unlimited messages.
View your detailed personality profile (based on the Compatibility Quiz taken at registration).
Control the distance between you and your matches.
Profile Check – get a review on your profile from eHarmony as well as personalized tips on how to improve your profile.
Premium membership costs:
Premium light – 6 months – $45.90 per month
Premium PLUS – 12 months – $29.90 per month
Premium EXTRA – 24 months – $19.90 per month
On each plan, you can pay the full amount up front or pay the full subscription amount off over the following 2, 3, or 4 months. This helps to make the eHarmony price more affordable and accessible to more people. It's important to note that if you buy a membership, it will autorenew at the end of the period. This means that it will become a year-long plan at the Premium PLUS price.
Why is eHarmony so expensive? eHarmony provides a much more detailed matching service than other dating sites because your personality profile is analyzed and then matched with other users. This costs them money, so it costs the user extra. Look out for the welcome eHarmony discount code of 50% off your first month, which will remain valid for around 40 hours. This will give you the first month (only the first month) of any plan for half price.
How Safe Is eHarmony?
Report Profile
A method of keeping you safe while using the site or app is that you can report any user who has done something wrong or has made you suspicious. Clicking on the three dots in the top right corner of their profile brings up the options to either make them one of your favorites, report them, or remove them from your matches.
If you click 'Report Profile', you'll need to choose a reason from a drop-down list that includes options like inappropriate profile content, scam, underage, racism, harassment, or threats of violence. You must add more details to explain the situation and reason for reporting, and click 'Report profile now'. The eHarmony customer service team will investigate the situation and take appropriate action.
SMS Verification
The only way to verify your profile is through SMS verification. This involves entering your mobile number and the security code texted to you. Doing this will get you the SMS Verified symbol on your profile. There are very few profiles with this symbol, and, in fact, our test profile searched and couldn't find any profile with the check mark.
Apart from almost no one completing the process, it's also one of the weakest forms of verification on dating sites. All it proves is that the person behind the profile has a mobile phone. It does nothing to ensure that folks are using their own photos or that they are who they say they are. eHarmony would benefit from introducing more forms of verification to keep members safe from scammers.
Fake Profiles
A big problem with online dating is the risk of people using the site with ulterior motives. This may include catfishing, which means using someone else's photos and pretending to be them, or scamming, which is catfishing, but they also attempt to get money from you. The good news is that most profiles seemed to be genuine. Since eHarmony uses technology and a team to review profiles, they are constantly on the lookout for any suspicious activity.
The bad news is that, while perusing the Terms of Use, we found section o. This section states that eHarmony may create test profiles to monitor the operation of the services. There's no way of knowing which profiles are test profiles. Now, while a profile run by the site isn't going to try to scam you, it does suggest that there are folks out there talking to who they think is someone special but that they'll never meet because the profile is run by staff.
Final Thoughts
eHarmony is widely regarded as one of the best online dating sites for companionship dating. People who join are looking for serious relationships, so most profiles are completed with thoughtfulness and care. While it's a serious plus point that most profiles have photos, unfortunately, with a free account, you can't see the photos since they're all blurred.
The eHarmony pricing for premium is very expensive and is made more costly by the fact that the shortest period you can choose is 6 months. However, if you want to send more than one message or see your matches' faces, you'll have to bite the bullet and purchase a subscription. When you see how great the matching service is, you might consider that it's worth the cost, and you can see a sample of the matching with a free profile.
If you've been searching for love but have found that other sites are too focused on casual dating or hookups, eHarmony should be your next site. Most of its users are looking for something serious, and while the cost is high, the quality of matches you'll get is high enough to warrant it. There are payment plans to help make it more affordable. For all these reasons, we rate eHarmony.com 8/10.
