Her Review

HER lesbian dating app homepage of two women kissing. The Sex Guide

Review

What Is HER App?

The HER dating app is designed to help women and queer individuals connect with each other. It might not be the best place for (cis-gender) men looking for women, as this lesbian dating app caters best to LGBTQIA+ community members. While the site is mainly targeted at lesbian women, it is open to pretty much all genders and sexualities, making it amongst the most inclusive platforms we reviewed to date.

Through this HER dating app review, our experts have created their own profiles on the platform and put to the test everything the app has to offer. Want to learn more about how the platform works? Read on to get answers to all your burning questions!

Pros

  • Many completed and verified profiles.

  • Easy to use.

  • LGBTQIA+ friendly.

  • Free to use (premium only adds some nice-to-have perks).

Cons

  • The "Communities" feature is underutilized.

  • Lengthy registration process.

  • The app is not available on desktop, and the website is not operational.

Login Process

HER is available both on iOS and Android devices through the App Store and Play Store respectively. Once downloaded, you can start the login process by selecting one of the 4 options given:

  • Facebook

  • Instagram

  • Google (Gmail) account

  • Phone number

Once you pick one of the above options, the site will begin asking for some basic information.

Initially, you will be asked for things such as your name, date of birth, and email address. This is followed by a  prompt to upload a minimum of 3 (and maximum of 6) photos of yourself. In true gender-inclusive fashion, HER allows you to choose your pronouns, offering options such as she/her, he/him, they/them, and ze/hir/hirs. Once done, you'll be asked to choose your sexual identity from a 20-option field.

Along with your sexual identity/orientation, you are asked to enter the gender you identify with, presenting you with a list of 21 options, including anything from female to genderfluid. However, as you might expect from a dating app that targets mainly lesbian women, there is no way to register as a cis-gender man. From there, the app will ask you for your relationship status and the types of relationships you are looking for. This field includes different options, such as hookups, monogamous or polyamorous relationships, just friends, or even "something casual".

Subsequently, you can fill in some optional sections, which will cut down your profile-completion time. These sections include your height, a short bio, and a selection of interests from a given list. HER will then ask whether you have or like pets, your star sign, your drinking and smoking habits, and your political views. This is followed by several questions that operate as prompts to help people interested in you start a conversation. These include:

  • Your coming-out story

  • One thing people should know about you

  • Your ideal first date

  • Your tattoos (if any)

Finally, you'll need to accept cookies for personalized ads and opt to share your location in order to view potential matches near you.

As you can probably guess from the steps given above, the HER registration process is quite extensive. We'd recommend taking your time in each section, though, as the app will use the provided information to match you with compatible people.

Profile Completion

It goes without saying that if you skip any of the optional sections mentioned above, you will be asked to complete them at a later stage. Nonetheless, the app asks for some extra information in addition to the sections mentioned above in order to finalize your profile.

These begin with an array of stickers and pride pins you can stick to showcase your personality and add some color to your profile. These include city names (mostly North American ones), sexuality and gender labels, as well as some queer terms such as "lipstick lesbian" or "stud".

This is followed by questions on:

  • Your use of cannabis (you can choose "regularly", "socially", "no", or "prefer not to say")

  • Whether you have or want kids

  • Your religious beliefs

  • Your food preferences/diet

Lastly, you will be asked to connect your Spotify and Instagram accounts to showcase your top artists and most recent posts, respectively.

User Account Quality

HER offers a premium service, and this is also reflected by the quality of its users. We hardly found any profiles that were disingenuous; the majority of them were verified, and all of them featured profile pictures and gallery photos. Due to the app's swiping feature, it is hard to tell how many profiles there are. However, as with most dating platforms, the closer you are to a city, the more profiles you’ll be able to view.

The aforementioned feature is the only way to get matched with others on the platform, and as such, HER does not have a dedicated matching algorithm either. Considering who you get matched with is up to you, there's no denying how important the prompts, as well as any additional information you include on your profile are. Complete profiles give a better idea of who the person behind the screen could be and allow others to pick those who best suit their preferences.

Dating Features

HER Communities

HER allows you to join certain groups called "Communities" designed to bring together people who have similar interests. These groups are open to anyone worldwide and cover topics such as:

  • Traveling & Living Abroad

  • Non-Monogamous Relationships

  • Coming Out Advice & Conversations

  • Thirst Traps

  • 40+ Community

Once you become a member of a community, you will be able to view other members' posts on your feed. A great deal of people like to ask questions, start discussions, and even post pictures related to the community. It's definitely a great way to meet new people, make online friends, and learn more about a topic you are passionate about.

Events

"Events'' is a sub-category of "Communities" where a group, individual, or even the HER team themselves can schedule an event. The events can be both virtual and in-person and offer the opportunity for people who share interests to interact.

Over the course of writing this review, we pinpointed events such as virtual business networking, transgender self-care 101, and Top, Bottom, or Switch discussions. Some of the events above are recurring on a monthly basis, thanks to the HER team, giving new users the opportunity to experience the feature firsthand.

Rewind

The app mainly works through its swiping feature, which presents users with a profile photo and name. If you are interested, you swipe right, and if you are not, you swipe left - it's as simple as that. When two people swipe right on each other, they can start chatting.

While it is possible to accidentally swipe left on a profile you are interested in, HER allows you to right a wrong by adding that profile back into your stack. Rewind undoing, however, is only available to Gold and Platinum members. So, if you really don't want to miss the chance to chat with someone, you might want to look into HER's paid packages.

Add Friends

Aside from liking people through the swiping feature, you can also add people to your friend list. Of course, they will need to accept your request in order for you to be able to message them. HER shares how many friends you have on the app through your profile, letting others on the platform know that you are friendly and approachable.

If you wish to message a friend, you won't be able to find them in your messaging tab straight away. Instead, you will need to visit your profile and navigate to your friends list. Unfortunately, this is the case for chatting with anyone who is not in your immediate vicinity unless you purchase a platinum membership, which allows you to change your location.

Prices & Costs

You can download the HER app from the App Store or Play Store, and you won't have to pay a penny to create an account and start using the application. HER does make money from showing you ads while you swipe through profiles, but that's the cost of "free" nowadays.

How Safe Is The Dating App HER?

Account Verification

The HER app allows users to verify their identities by copying a given pose and taking a selfie. This picture will only be used to confirm your identity, giving an extra layer of protection from catfishes and online scammers for the app's users.

A minor complaint about the process is the pose it requests from its users. More specifically, our experts were asked to raise a peace sign, which is quite a common pose. One could argue that fake profiles would be able to find their proxy striking a pose like that and get "verified". Nonetheless, we've also found that the HER app will ask for different poses for other verification processes, which definitely makes the process more secure.

Privacy Policy and Terms of Use

We’re pleased to report that there is nothing to be concerned about in the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. In fact, your information seems to be well protected by the HER app and the HER team. The only thing to note is that, like all other dating sites, some third parties are used to gather information for research, marketing purposes, and to handle payments. Those third parties comply with the HER team’s standards for information security.

Final Thoughts

As a lesbian dating app, HER is a great place for FLINTA dating and socializing. There are a good number of profiles, of which all have photos, and many are verified. Registration and profile creation are easy but take a little while, so set aside a few minutes to join. The folks on the app are active and friendly, as well, and what more could you ask for from a dating platform?

The “Communities” and “Events” features have a lot of potential, though they are underutilized. The fact that you can use the HER dating app free of charge is a huge plus point and a reason to at least try it out.

We Are Her has done a great job creating an app that caters to the LGBTQIA community. Whether you’re bi, pansexual, or asexual, you’ll find friends, hookups, and maybe even love. We’ll rate it 8/10 and recommend it to any FLINTA looking for love or fun.
