Review

What Is Kasual Dating App

Online dating apps and sites generally allow people to seek any kind of relationship, from serious relationships to short flings. And while some lean more towards serious and others more towards casual, very few are specifically for no-strings-attached encounters. And that's what Kasual is for. The app, previously called Yumi, aims to connect you to users who live near you and are just looking for a hookup.

In this thorough Kasual app review, we'll examine its advantages and drawbacks, pricing structure, and safety protocols. You will also learn exactly how to set up your profile effectively and ensure it's fully optimized. We'll also explore the app's standout dating features and evaluate the quality of other users' profiles. Lastly, our review will address frequently asked questions and deliver a final verdict, helping you determine if Kasual is your ideal dating platform.

Pros

  • It is totally anonymous; you can discreetly search for hookups without your name or face visible.

  • Fast and easy registration.

  • You can use the app for free.

  • Female users get the premium subscription, Elite, for free.

Cons

  • Uploading photos with your face isn't necessary, which raises the risk of encountering scammers or catfish.

  • No desktop version of the app is available.

  • It can be confusing to use the app – the card flip game doesn't intuitively make sense.

  • Smaller user base so limited number of potential matches.

  • Male users must pay for Elite.

Login Process

After downloading the Kasual dating app, you'll have two options: continue with your Google account or continue anonymously. No email address is necessary. If you opt to continue anonymously, you'll need to answer a few questions. If you choose to use your Google account, you'll select which account you want to use and then answer the same questions. The process is straightforward, and it's super quick and easy to complete.

You must input:

  • Your gender (man, woman, trans, or couple)

  • The genders you're interested in (you can choose one or more)

  • your age.

Note: Remember that you won't be able to change any of this later.

After that, you need to add 1 to 4 pictures. Don't worry if you need to be discreet – you don't have to show your face. Next, you get the option to verify yourself by copying a pose and snapping a picture. You can skip this step and complete it later if you want. Location permissions must then be enabled so that the app can show you matches near you. Finally, it'll ask you to allow notifications, and you can then start browsing.

Profile Completion

Your profile completeness level is called your Profile Strength on Kasual, which makes sense because profiles with more information and pictures tend to perform better on online dating apps. There are 6 steps to reach 100%, and during registration, you took the initial step, which was adding your first photo. If you had uploaded all 4 photos during registration, you would have also completed the second step, which is uploading more photos.

The next step is adding a bio/about me section. You can either type your answer or record an audio bio. This is a fun way to make your profile more interesting because potential matches get to hear your voice and start getting to know you from what you say and how you say it. The 4th step involves answering some questions about what you're looking for and offering, your needs and boundaries, and how important respect and protection are to you.

The 5th step is completing some additional details about yourself. These typically include your height, ethnicity, body type, relationship status, religion, and education level. You'll also be asked about your smoking, drinking, and drug habits. The last two questions are uncommon on dating apps but are relevant to those looking for casual hookups: your STD status and how often you get tested. The final step is getting your photo verified.

User Account Quality

Kasual is a site for hooking up, not for love, so profiles aren't very detailed. You don't need to add photos of your face, which is a positive if you need discretion but a negative in general because we obviously look to hook up with people we find attractive; no one hopes to hook up with a car or a flower. The non-human pictures also allow space for catfish, scammers, and underage people to join the app.

The Kasual hookup app is still growing, so it has a limited number of users. Depending on where you are, you may only have a handful of potential matches, which means it's mainly helpful to people in bigger cities. There's no real algorithm at play here; you simply browse profiles in the For You tab or randomly get matched with people in the Cards tab. About 30% of male profiles were photo-verified, and only about 5% of female profiles were photo-verified.

Dating Features

Cards Tab – Random Flips

Instead of swiping through profiles, Kasual uses a different method. You're shown four mystery cards, and you choose one to flip at random. The mystery cards have no pictures, only a question mark. Once you pick a card, it flips over, and you see the person's profile picture, age, gender, and location. You can then add a message to your Random Flip, which will open a Limited Chat, and you can start chatting for free.

A "50% chance of success" is often mentioned when this feature is discussed, but our experience shows that every flip yields a profile that you can start chatting with immediately. It's not clear what is supposed to happen 50% of the time; it seems there is a 100% success rate here.

You'll also get to see the other 3 profiles, but you cannot match or chat with them unless you use a Super Flip. You then swipe right, up, or down to start a new round of mystery cards and start the process again. You can only chat with someone if you've Randomly Flipped them, if you both like each other on the For You tab, or if you Super Flip them.

For You Tab

Another method of browsing profiles on Kasual is through the "For You" tab, which is identified by a compass icon. This feature presents matches based on location. Within this tab, you can scroll through a limited number of profiles, viewing their profile pictures and distance from you.

Once you've clicked on their profile picture, you can access more information about them and either swipe right or click the heart icon to indicate interest, or swipe left or click the X icon to pass. If both parties express interest, you'll match and can start chatting. Additionally, you can Super Flip them for immediate chat access. If you accidentally pass on someone, the Elite feature allows you to rewind, undo the pass, and click the heart instead.

This tab limits you to viewing and interacting with 19 profiles per day. While you can view more profile pictures, you can't interact with them unless you have Elite membership. This approach encourages you to upgrade your membership, especially since it appears that the most attractive profiles and those closest to you are inaccessible without it.

Super Flips

Super Flips are Kasual's 'Super Likes.' When you Super Flip someone, you notify the recipient, indicate your interest, and enable you to start chatting even if you haven't matched yet. You can use Super Flips in both the Cards and For You tab. You receive 1 free Super Flip per week with a free profile, while an Elite membership grants you 7 Super Flips.

On the Cards tab, once you've Randomly Flipped, you see the profiles you missed out on. If you'd like to chat with them, you can Super Flip them and start chatting. On the For You tab, you can either like someone or Super Flip them to highlight your profile in their list.

Limited Chats and Extends

A Limited Chat will begin when you've Randomly Flipped someone, Super-Flipped them, or matched on the For You page. This functions like a regular chat but with the condition that you have only 24 hours to send the first message to each other before the chat expires. Both parties must send a message within this timeframe, or the chat will end. Limited chats encourage users to engage in actual conversations on the platform rather than simply swiping for an ego boost and never initiating communication.

If the chat is about to expire, you can extend it by Super Flipping if you haven't done so before. Moreover, with an Elite membership, you can continue chatting with matches that have expired. Some other fun features in the chats include sending pictures, sharing your location, sending voice messages, and using emojis. Elite membership also offers read receipts, allowing you to see if your match has read your message and is deliberately ignoring you or simply hasn't seen your message yet.

Prices & Costs

Kasual dating is monetized through subscriptions to its premium membership, Elite. Having Elite is said to get you up to 5x more matches, although we often see these claims when dating apps are trying to sell their subscriptions, and other Kasual reviews say that figure is inaccurate. To test the grounds, you can email customer support to get a one-week free trial of Elite.

Elite

This membership has many benefits, including:

  • No limit on matching (see all your Cards and For You potential matches).

  • See a list of who has liked you (so that you can instantly match).

  • 7 Super Flips and 1 Boost per week.

  • Change your location (explore matches in nearby towns or future travel destinations).

  • More control over your privacy settings.

Elite is free for female users. For male users, however, it is available for different periods and gets cheaper the longer you subscribe:

  • 1 Month: $29.99

  • 3 Months: $59.99 ($19.99 per month)

  • 6 Months: $89.99 ($14.99 per month)

As with most dating sites, you'll be billed the full amount at the start, and your subscription will auto-renew at the end of the period. You can disable auto-renewal in your app store settings. You may be offered a 35% discount on Elite after you first join the app, but this could vary depending on your location and will only be available for the first 24 hours.

Pro

The app also has another lower subscription tier coming soon, called Pro. Kasual Pro has similar benefits to Elite, but only 5 Super Flips per week (instead of 7), and doesn't include advanced filters, read receipts, or the extra privacy settings that Elite does. Pro will be slightly more affordable:

  • 1 Month: $19.99

  • 3 Months: $39.99 ($13.33 per month)

While the subscription isn't live yet, Kasual's website shares that it's on its way, so keep checking back for updates.

Boosts

You can also purchase Boosts. Activating this feature will highlight your profile to potential matches in your area for 24 hours, making it more likely that you'll get extra matches as more people will see you. Boosts cost:

  • 1  Boost: $4.99

  • 5 Boosts: $19.99 ($3.99 each)

  • 10 Boosts: $29.99 ($2.99 each)

How Safe Is Kasual?

Photo Verification

Kasual allows you to photo-verify yourself when you sign up, but you can skip it and do it later, too. The photo verification process involves uploading a selfie where you copy a given pose. Once you've done this, you'll get the verified badge on your profile. From our online testing experience with Kasual, we've noticed that very few profiles have the verified badge.

Usually, photo verification increases the legitimacy of a user and the site because it gets compared to your profile picture and proves that you're using your own photos and not catfishing. However, you're not required to upload a picture of your face on Kasual, so this photo verification only proves that you're human. It does nothing to prevent catfish or scammers from using fake photos. Usually, a verified badge means you can trust the profile, but not on Kasual.

Personal Information

According to the Terms and Conditions, the company safeguards your personal information using generally accepted best practices. While this description may seem somewhat vague, it also specifies that background checks are performed on all staff members with access to personal information, and these employees are required to adhere to confidentiality agreements. This policy extends to various roles within the company, including those in technical support positions.

Another layer of comfort is that, because the app is discreet, very limited personal information is shared with it in the first place. You don't add your name; they don't ask for an email address, phone number, or even a face picture. Your personal information is kept safe by default, depending on how you use the app.

Final Thoughts

The Kasual dating app fills a niche for people who are explicitly and only looking for hookups and flings. The app is very discreet and does not require your name, phone number, or connection to any of your social media to join. You also don't have to add a photo of your face, although this has knock-on effects on profile verification and account legitimacy. There are a small number of photo-verified profiles.

Its unusual matching method of randomly flipping cards is interesting, but most people don't choose their partners based on random matching, even for a fling. There are fewer members than on more mainstream dating sites, which is limiting. You can use the app for free or pay for Elite to get some extra features (or, if you're female, use Elite for free).

For these reasons, we rate Kasual 6.9 out of 10. It's an interesting app that works reasonably well technically, but the small user base means that your chances of IRL success are low. You might be better off trying a mainstream app known for hookups, like Tinder.

FAQ

Is Kasual a good app?

Signing up and starting is easy, but the four-card feature and limited chats can be confusing. Once you figure it out (we explained everything in the review above), it's a reasonably good app with minimal bugs.

How does Kasual work?

You download the app and create an account. Then, you can flip one card daily on the "Cards tab" and 'like' or 'pass' profiles on the "For You tab." To keep the match, you must start chatting within 24 hours.

Is Kasual legit?

It's a legitimate app with some genuine users, but its age and photo verification systems are notably lacking, making it susceptible to scammers and catfish.

Is Kasual free?

The Kasual app's basic features are free, but some extra features are reserved for premium users.

How to delete Kasual account

To delete your account on Kasual, click on your profile picture, then select "Settings." Scroll down to "Privacy & Security" and click "Delete Account." You'll be prompted to confirm your decision and provide a reason. However, please note that deleting your account won't automatically cancel your subscription—you'll need to manage that separately through your app store.
